When outdoor air quality is poor or a smog warning (yellowish mist composed of gas and particulates) is in effect, it means there is a high amount of pollutants in the air.

The main pollutants of outdoor air are:

fine particles (PM2.5). These are tiny particles that can penetrate deep into the respiratory system;
ozone (O3);
sulfur dioxide (SO2);
nitrogen dioxide (NO2);
carbon monoxide (CO).
These pollutants come from among others:

motor vehicles;
industrial processes;
heating (oil, wood, propane, etc.);
wildfires.
Air pollutants can affect the health of the entire population. Some people, however, are more sensitive than others to pollutants and are more likely to feel the adverse effects.

sYMPTOMS
People who breathe polluted air can have a variety of symptoms. These vary according to the sensitivity of each person to air pollution. In the short term, the main symptoms are:

eye irritation;
wheezing or difficulty breathing
irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract (coughing);
increased shortness of breath, especially during physical activity.
The severity of these symptoms depends in particular on the state of health of the person as well as the level of pollution to which it is exposed. Misuse of some medicines may also help to make these symptoms appear and make them worse.

It is important to note that the symptoms experienced may also be caused by factors other than air pollution such as:

the overwhelming heat;
moisture;
viruses;
pollen, such as ragweed.
When to consult
You need to see a doctor quickly if you have any of the following symptoms:

feeling of tightness or tightness in the chest
pain felt during a deep breath;
difficulty breathing without physical effort
If you have questions about your health, call Info-Santé 811.

Complications
A person who regularly breathes polluted air for several years can have some health problems:

chronic lung disease, such as chronic bronchitis;
cardiovascular disease, that is, heart disease and blood vessels;
lung cancer.
Breathing polluted air can also worsen the symptoms of people who already have chronic diseases, especially respiratory or heart diseases. In rare cases, this can lead to hospitalization or the premature death of the person.

Risk factors
The risks of experiencing discomfort caused by air pollution increase:

when the quality of the outside air is bad;
when a smog warning is in effect;
when the heat is overwhelming;
during intense physical activity or long-term exits, while people breathe a lot of air.
