EPISODES OF POLLUTION
ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION AND AIRPORT ACTIVITIES
THE MAIN SOURCES
Atmospheric emissions of natural origin
Forest fires, bush fires and volcanism can cause atmospheric emissions of pollutants.

Anthropogenic emissions
Anthropogenic atmospheric emissions are emissions of human origin.
The distinction is commonly made according to the nature of the sources of emissions (mobile or fixed sources) or the sector of activity. The majority of human activities are the direct or indirect source of pollutant emissions.

Industrial facilities or power generation plants
Industry is a sector responsible for much of the air emissions.
The use of electricity does not emit pollutants at the place of consumption, but it very often generates emissions at the place where this electricity is produced. Examples of pollutants emitted by this sector: sulfur dioxide (SO2), dust, metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

transport network
Whether the mode of transportation is air, sea or automobile, it contributes to emissions of air pollutants. Examples of pollutants emitted by this sector: nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulates in exhaust gases, carbon monoxide (CO).

Household garbage incineration
Any combustion generates emissions, the burning of waste either by an individual or in a dedicated facility is causing pollution. Examples of pollutants emitted: metals, hydrochloric acid (HCI), dioxins.

Agriculture
The agricultural sector is responsible for some of the air pollution, through the use of machinery in particular, but also because of the use of plant protection products or spreading (ammonia emission). Examples of pollutants emitted: dust, ammonia (NH3).

Domestic activities
By using plant protection products, paints, household products, cooking ... we all emit atmospheric pollutants. Examples of pollutants emitted: volatile organic compounds.

Individual and collective heating
This sector is responsible for much of the emissions in temperate regions.
The pollutants concerned are usually sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides or even fine particles.
Air conditioning indirectly generates emissions because of its high electricity consumption but also if the refrigerant gas is not recovered.
